Foreign Language Proficiency Exams

What does the exam assess?

Language proficiency exams assess your level of competence in the Language Other Than English (LOTE) through the following activities:

  • Conducting a conversation on a broad range of practical, social and professional topics, using appropriate language and register and showing socio-cultural awareness
  • Participating in a role play to demonstrate your ability in the LOTE over the telephone and write notes on the major points of the conversation
  • Discussions/making representations where you will be required to interact with the examiner in a role play situation to facilitate a discussion or make representations on behalf of another party
  • Interpreting an oral exchange between two interlocutors into English and the target language
  • Extracting salient points from a recording, writing an accurate summary of the articles you have listened to
  • Translating a text where you will be required to demonstrate skills in translating a text from the target language into proper English

All the components of the exam reflect the functions performed by individuals in their day-to-day dealings in the work environment.
