The Centre for International Language Training provides an average of 20,000 hours of face-to-face, individualised language training across Australia per year in over 40 different languages.
The language training provided by the Centre focuses on practical and effective communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in the target language. Cultural aspects of the target country are also tightly embedded in all language training sessions. To provide a sound background in cultural awareness, some of the topics covered include; history, politics, religion, lifestyle, etiquette, values and customs.
Client feedback indicates that this model of training better prepares individuals for their work in the international arena and has directly translated to more meaningful and cohesive relationships once their in-country experience begins.
We offer the following training and related services:
- Survival Language Training
This type of language training is offered to individuals who will be working or travelling overseas yet do not require a high level of proficiency. It is normally delivered on the basis of three hours per day, five days per week for a period of four to six weeks. Spouses/partners may also attend the training sessions. - Intensive ‘Short-Term’ or ‘Long-Term Language Training’
This training is normally conducted on a one-on-one basis for 3 hour per day, five days per week over 6 to 12 months. Individuals undertake long-term training to enable them to develop a professional level of language proficiency. The actual period of long-term language training provided to students to gain a professional level of language proficiency depends on his/her existing proficiency in the required language, resources and their job or vocational requirements. - Discussion Groups (also known as Language Maintenance Programs)
Lunchtime discussion groups provide an opportunity for officers to maintain their language proficiency. The discussion groups are less structured than survival or long-term language classes but still require tutor preparation to ensure that the discussions are stimulating, topical and relevant. - Aptitude Testing
